CASWELL BEACH, NC (WWAY) — An endangered sea turtle laid its nest at Caswell Beach on Memorial Day.
A Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle crawled onshore Monday afternoon just after 4:00 p.m., with the Caswell Beach Turtle Watch responding within 10 minutes.
Kemp’s Ridley’s are the smallest and most critically endangered of the sea turtle species, according to the group.
“The eggs were very difficult to find even though we saw her digging, laying and covering up,” a statement from the group said. “As permit holders were able to collect data, but she did not have any tags on her flippers.”
That brings the 2024 sea turtle nest total to nine on Caswell Beach.
